Course Description

This course supports Educators Day at the New Swan Shakespeare Center, a half-day meeting with teachers, actors, and scholars, supplemented by attending and evaluating additional lectures created for E9: Shakespeare, UCI’s online general education Shakespeare course; and other materials produced by the New Swan Shakespeare Center.

 

Prerequisites — Classes or Knowledge Required Before Taking This Course

None. This course is designed for high school English teachers but is open to anyone.

 

Course Objectives

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Evaluate different approaches to teaching Romeo and Juliet
  • Practice social justice in Shakespeare pedagogy
  • Develop and share a sample lesson on Romeo and Juliet
  • Integrate acting techniques and the actor’s perspective into the teaching of English literature
  • Consider ballet as a resource for teaching Shakespeare

Julia Reinhard Lupton is professor of English at UC Irvine and co-director of the New Swan Shakespeare Center. She is the author or co-author of five books on Shakespeare. She is a former Guggenheim Fellow and former Trustee of the Shakespeare Association of America. She is an award-winning teacher who loves teaching Shakespeare to undergraduates, graduate students, and the community.

 

                                                                                                                                                           

Class Meeting Information

This course includes one synchronous group meeting, Educators Day at the New Swan Shakespeare Center, July 14, 2021, 3:00-6:00 pm Pacific. Please register for the Zoom link.

To receive one unit of UCI Continuing Education credit, participants should also

  • View 10 short lectures (10-20 minutes long) on Romeo and Juliet, developed for E9: Shakespeare, a team-taught online course developed at UC Irvine for use across the UC system and take a one-hour exam on the content.
  • In addition, choose ONE video lecture from the New Swan Series “How to Live Like Shakespeare: Colloquies on Renaissance Wisdom" and write a short response.

  • Attend July 28 workshop with Sarah Enloe, “Direct Address / Audience Contact in Shakespeare Performance.” (1.5 hours). (A recording will be available for students who cannot attend the live presentation.]

  • Create a curricular plan for teaching Romeo and Juliet. This is a graded assignment.
  • Professor Lupton will hold a two-hour debrief with all participants to compare your teaching strategies. jrlupton@uci.edu

GRADING:

Attendance and Participation in Educators Day, July 14 and Final Debrief: 30%
Lectures on Romeo and Juliet  with follow-up take-home exam: 30%
Attend and respond to Sarah Enloe workshop: 10%
Attend and respond to lecture about Shakespeare and wisdom: 10%
Design a curricular plan: 20%
